Listening practice: Deep ocean life and mountain ranges

Hello jellyfish. Here's a TED Talk how volcano vents help create ocean life: David Gallo: Life in the deep oceans.

Here are some words to know before you watch:

  • A vent is an an opening through which air, steam, smoke, liquid, etc., can go into or out of something.
  • A ridge a long area of land that is on top of a mountain or hill. In this talk, the ridges are in the ocean.
  • And bacteria are groups of very small living things.

And, of  course, here are some comprehension questions. Feel free to post your answers in the comments below. Try to write short answers.

  1. Are the longest mountain ranges on land or in the ocean? [detail]
  2. Do most earthquakes and volcanoes occur on land or in the ocean? [detail]
  3. The speaker says that these deep ocean areas are "A world within a world." Why does he say that? [author's purpose]
  4. How are these scientists making maps of the ocean mountain ranges? [detail]
  5. Using the maps, what do the scientists drive underwater? [detail]
  6. What is the pressure at these deep ocean sites? (X pounds per square inch) [detail]
  7. The sun light does not reach this deep into the ocean. So from where does life there get its energy? [detail]
  8. How many new species has this project discovered? [detail]
  9. What is the main idea of the presentation? [main idea]
  10. Do you think the scientists fear being in the water? [inference]
